Linda organized a “bottle
kiln” fund raiser at the
Shadbolt Centre in
December of 2014. The
idea was to build a kiln
using liquor bottles, fire
it with wood, sell the
melted bottles and
donate the proceeds to
The Burnaby Christmas
Bureau. Along with Linda
were: Jay MacLennon,
Sharon Raey, Tony Wilson,
Fredi Rahn, Cheryl
Stapelton and Brad.
Starting with a solid base
of concrete blocks and
fire bricks . . .
. . they started laying out
approximately 450 liquor
bottles with the spouts
pointed inward.
The bottles were packed
with recycled clay mixed
with sand.
The kiln was smaller at
the top to make a
chimney effect.
The last layer before the
chimney.
They were working in the
rain under a tent which
was moved by a storm on
the last night before the
firing. The tent was
damaged but the kiln
withstood the storm.
The kiln was completed
with a Santa Clause and
chimney designed and
produced by Sharon.
They started the fire and
slowly built up the heat
over time.
The temperature reached
1,450 degrees Celsius and
the bottles started to
slump.
It was quite colorful with
the flames shooting out
the top at the height of
the firing.
Inspecting the bottles as
the kiln cooled the next
day.
The resulting effect of
the heat on the bottles
which were sold for the
charity.
